The Sustainable Development Network is entrusted with promoting sustainable development in Malta. The Network’s function is to encourage sustainable development knowledge and practices widely. Its composition lends it the potential to act as catalyst to integrate sustainable development concepts with governance aspects in the civil service.  During the period under review, a number of initiatives have taken place that contributed towards momentum build-up in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Act.

The Sustainable Development Network is chaired by Mr Alfred Quintano, whilst Mr Mark Causon and Mr Joshua Zammit were appointed as members of the said body. In accordance with the Act, the Permanent Secretaries representing the three pillars of sustainable development are also part of the network. These include Mr Joseph F Caruana, Permanent Secretary MSDEC, Ms Nancy Caruana, Permanent Secretary Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business and Mr Mark Musu, Permanent Secretary Ministry For The Family and Social Solidarity. The representative of the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Claudine Sciberras is a member.

The Sustainable Development Network meets quarterly as prescribed by the SD Act. And the current policy of the Chairman is to focus in depth on one of the four pillars of SD per meeting, therefore adopting either a social, economic, environmental or a cultural theme per meeting. All subject-specific agenda items are introduced by invited experts in that particular field. The topics discussed so far are; The sharing economy, The National Strategy Policy for Poverty Reduction & Social Inclusion, the Pension Reform, Cultural policy, The EU Year of Sustainable Development and the Green Economy Strategy and Action Plan.
