Sustainable Development Act

The aim of the Sustainable Development Act is to mainstream sustainable development across the workings of government, to raise awareness of sustainable development issues and practices across society and to promote the adoption thereof, as well as to set up a Guardian of Future Generations.

The Act provides for a system of Sustainable Development Coordinators in every Ministry, and this role shall be assigned to Permanent Secretaries.  It also proposes the setting up of a Sustainable Development Network with the aim of promoting sustainable development in Malta. This Network will be make up of a Chairperson appointed by the Prime Minister, the Sustainable Development Coordinators, the head of the Strategic Policy Secretariat, together with a persons appointed by the Minister having knowledge and experience in environmental (from the Non-Governmental Organisation sector), social and economic matters.
The Act also provides for a Sustainable Development Focal Point in every government department, agency or entity as well as for a Guardian of Future Generations, with the aim of safeguarding inter-generational and intra-generational sustainable development in Malta.
